Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian painter and a leading figure of the Vienna Secession, a movement that sought to break from traditional academic art. Klimt is best known for his richly decorative paintings that combine symbolism, eroticism, and elaborate ornamentation.

His most famous works come from his Golden Phase, during which he incorporated gold leaf and intricate patterns inspired by Byzantine mosaics. Paintings such as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I exemplify this luxurious style.

Klimt’s work frequently explored themes of love, sexuality, life, and death, often portraying women as powerful and mysterious figures. His compositions merge realistic portraiture with abstract decorative elements, creating visually complex surfaces.

Although controversial during his lifetime, Klimt’s art later became widely celebrated for its sensual beauty and innovative design. Today he is considered one of the most important artists of the early modern period.
