Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker and one of the most influential artists of modern art. He was a leading figure of Fauvism, a movement that emphasized bold color, expressive brushwork, and simplified forms. Critics originally used the term “Fauves,” meaning “wild beasts,” to describe the intense colors and unconventional style used by Matisse and his contemporaries.
Matisse believed that color could express emotion and structure in painting. His works often feature vibrant palettes, flattened perspective, and fluid, decorative compositions. Notable paintings such as The Dance and Woman with a Hat demonstrate his innovative approach to color and form.
In the later years of his life, when illness limited his ability to paint, Matisse developed his famous paper cut-outs, which he described as “drawing with scissors.” These compositions used painted paper shapes arranged into dynamic, abstract designs.
Throughout his career, Matisse explored themes of harmony, balance, and joy, seeking to create art that offered a sense of calm and visual pleasure. His work has had a lasting influence on modern painting, abstraction, and design.
